Language World 1995 was at the University of York, 31 March – 3 April 1995, with ALL President Madeleine Bedford.
Another crammed schedule included: Socrates: the New EU Programme, French Language Training for Eurostar Train Drivers, and Primary Take-off with Lingua Support.
Sessions covered topics such as:
• Bringing cultural awareness into the classroom, Barry Jones, Homerton College, Cambridge for CILT;
• The place of language in Modern Languages degrees, Anthony Lodge, University of Newcastle;
• Caciones en la clase de español, Joaquín Seco, Instituto Cervantes, Leeds;
• Keeping pace with change: staff development in modern languages, Mike Calvert, University of Sheffield; and
• Creative language games for accuracy and fluency, Susan Thomas and Frances Walsh.
The Independent introduced us to Bridget Jones, Pierce Brosnan appeared on our screens ‘shaken, not stirred’, and Sir Cliff Richard received his knighthood. In the UK charts, Take That were ‘Back for Good’, and ‘PhOneDay’ put a ‘1’ in every area code in the land, making telephone numbers even more difficult to remember..!
