Language World 1996 again visited the West Country, at the University of Exeter, 29 March – 1 April 1996.

LW1996In the European Year of Lifelong Learning, ALL President Madeleine Bedford highlighted ‘contributions from many eminent practitioners drawn from all sectors of language education & training, and beyond’, including: Lifelong Teaching for Lifelong Learning, and The European Challenge.

This year we were:
• Extending more able pupils, Candy Newman, Advisory teacher with West Sussex Education Authority;
• Monitoring progress – teacher assessment in the classroom, Annie Singer, County Adviser for ML;
• Developing grammatical awareness through creative writing, Alison Taylo, lecturer and independent advisory teacher; and
• Motivating pupils from 11-16 and beyond, Claire Bleasdale, Principal Teacher of ML at Kemnay Academy, Scotland.

That same year: Team GB brought us 1 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals in the Olympics; Germany took the Euro96 title; the Spice Girls arrived with girl power; HRH Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced; and Oasis provided ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’.
