Language World 1998 went to the south coast: “The Way Ahead: language strategies for the millennium” was at The Brighton Centre, 03-05 April 1998.

LW1998ALL President Margaret Tumber stated that ‘the tradition of excellence[… was] upheld in the variety of topics and themes and in the high quality of speakers’ at Language World 1998.

Workshops included:
• How to produce, publish and market your own language course, John Langran, Ruslan Ltd.;
• Will English take over the world? David Graddol, English Company Ltd.;
• The way ahead for Dutch, Reinier Salverda, University College, London;
• Supporting part time language tutors in AE, Andrea Gewessler, Head of Kentwood Centre, Bromley Adult Education College; and
• Tasters of Arabic, Urdu, Indonesian, Japanese and Italian.

Also, the Good Friday Agreement was signed in Belfast, and Spanish celebrities took part in a marathon 48-hour reading of Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote.
