A summary of Languages Today magazine content in 2011/12.
Autumn 2011
For this issue, our language focus was on Mandarin: where, how and why it is being learnt in the UK, and what support is available to schools who would like to introduce it.
– We followed a day in the life of a Mandarin teacher, and heard about new resources available to teach Mandarin.
– We also heard from Kingsford School in London about their best 10 techniques for teaching non-Roman script languages; a primary teacher on learning French through sign language; the European Commission on EU opportunities for language teachers and learners, and more!
Spring 2012
This issue was all about 2012, and included:
- Resources, ideas and activities to bring the spirit of the 2012 Games into your classroom,
- Dr Adam Marshall from the British Chambers of Commerce about trading our way out of recession, and
- Some key areas that we think will become even more important as a result of the Curriculum Review, like teaching grammar, using target language and encouraging speaking.
- We also discovered the linguistic potential of snails, some fascinating resources about Mali, and new ways to learn languages through pictures; plus some great interviews, reviews and languages education updates.
Summer 2012
This edition of Languages Today was a music special issue; where we reported on some of the work currently being done in schools to combine music and language learning.
We talked to an opera singer about her typical day, found out how to bring rap, backing tracks and authentic songs into language teaching, and talked to musicians of all kinds about what their language skills mean to them. We also brought you an update on initial teacher training, and looked at language teaching in complementary schools.
