Apply for funding to provide teacher subject specialism training courses

Schools can now apply for funding to develop and deliver teacher subject specialism training

NewsThe purpose of teacher subject specialism training is to improve the subject knowledge of non-specialist and returning teachers. It will increase the number of hours taught by offering school-led teacher subject specialism training opportunities.

Participants can be:

• non-specialist teachers who could potentially teach a relevant subject in addition to their main subject
• non-specialist teachers who are currently teaching a relevant subject either full-time or in addition to their specialist subject
• teachers looking to return to the profession
• language specialists who aren’t currently teaching languages
• language specialists who could potentially teach an additional language

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) can support by:

• listing courses in their course directory
• providing marketing guidance and templates
• sharing lessons learned, benefits and successful practice from previous teacher subject specialism training programmes.

 

Modern foreign languages (MFL)

As a lead school, you can apply for up to £30,000 funding for teacher subject specialism training in languages. This can help you address workforce challenges in supporting the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).

The purpose of teacher subject specialism training for languages is to provide school-led language subject specialism training to non-specialist teachers and language subject specialism training to specialist language teachers who:
• are not currently teaching languages and may need refresher training to enable a move back into an language teaching role
• may be looking to teach a new language in addition to their language specialism.

The aim is to build capacity within the system to enable schools to better support delivery of the Ebacc.

The priority target groups for secondary languages are:

• teachers not currently teaching languages with post A level languages qualifications
• teachers not currently teaching languages with good A level languages qualifications
• teachers not teaching languages who are native / near native speakers
• non-specialist teachers currently teaching languages in addition to their specialist subject
• specialist language teachers who are not currently teaching languages and who need refresher training to enable a move back into a languages role
• specialist language teachers who have the capacity to teach a new language in addition to their language specialism.
