Call for Applications

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Embassy in London, the Institut Français du Royaume-Uni and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are looking for the next generation of translators into English.

Higher Education Institutions across the UK are being invited to nominate their most promising undergraduate student(s) to take part in a one-day exclusive Masterclass in Translation to be held at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, on Thursday, 27th April 2017 with the opportunity for two Masterclass students to visit the Frankfurt Book Fair this year.

This call is open to undergraduate students only. Students must have a proficiency in either German or French (Level B1 and higher, according to CEFR). A combination of the two languages is very welcome but not required.
The candidates and the nominators are asked to complete the application form and send it electronically to [email protected] by Tuesday, 18 April 2017. Applications received after this date are not eligible for inclusion in the selection process. Please see Terms and Conditions.

A jury will select the successful candidates who will be invited to participate in an exclusive Masterclass with eminent, award-winning translators and representatives of the publishing industry at the University of Cambridge on 27 April 2017. The successful candidates will also have an opportunity to experience life on campus at the University of Cambridge. Terms & Conditions apply.

The Masterclass will focus on:
· hands-on experience in translating literary texts from German / French into English,
· group discussions on new perspectives and trends in translation between German, French and English,
· one-to-one discussions with professional translators regarding the translation industry,
· an understanding of translation as a career option in the publishing world.

There will also be an opportunity for two of the participants in the Masterclass to receive a prize each, which consists of a sponsored visit to the Frankfurt Book Fair, which will take place between 11th and 15th October 2017.

Candidates must ensure that they are available on the respective dates (Masterclass: 27th April 2017, Frankfurt Book Fair: between 11th and 15th October 2017) before submitting an application via their nominators.
