Learning Strategies
You are a talented linguist. You may have forgotten that learning new words (both in their spoken and written form) is hard. We need to help learners remember, as sometimes they can approach learning in unhelpful ways. So your key question for this theme is, How can I help my learners to memorise new vocabulary? Linked to that is the question How do I best present new language to my class?
Don’t forget that spoken language may not need the same strategies as remembering the written language. (Sentences may be easier or make more sense because the words are in context.) There are different ways of memorising that appeal to different people.
This chapter from the book Something to Say? Promoting spontaneous classroom talk tackles the issue of how you engage pupils from the moment you present them with new vocabulary.
